Coming off another national championship win, the women’s hockey program is arguably one of the most successful teams in Badger history.
The Badgers hold the title for the most NCAA championships with seven. They started their NCAA domination in 2006, when they beat out the Minnesota Gophers for the national title. The program’s continued success has generated more buzz around women’s sports in Wisconsin.
The question on everyone’s mind: can Luke Fickell fix the Badgers?
Badger fans everywhere celebrated the hiring of Luke Fickell as the new football team’s head coach. I agree that the program has gone stale in recent years, but I’m just not convinced Coach Fickell will solve all the team’s problems.
Becca Schauer could have never predicted her basketball career would follow the path it did.
Becca graduated from Ozaukee high school in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. She grew up in the very small town of Fredonia that has a population of just about 2,000 people. During her high school basketball career, she was named to first team all-conference three out of her four years, earned conference player of the year her senior year, and ended her career being named the Ozaukee all-time girls’ basketball leading scorer. Schauer knew she wanted to continue playing competitive basketball after high school, and decided her next journey would be playing division 3 ball at Whitewater University, just an hour drive from her hometown.
The 2023 year did not bring much success for the Wisconsin Badgers 2022-2023 basketball program.
After starting relatively strong in conference play at the end of 2022, with wins against Maryland and Iowa, they then struggled to find a consistent rhythm after beating Minnesota on January 3rd. They went on to lose 6 of their next 7 conference games in a crucial month of Big Ten competition that tends to make or break teams.
From Green Bay to Madison, the Racine, Wisconsin native knew staying home was always in the plan.
Sophomore Kamari McGee – once the team leader in scoring for the UW-Green Bay Phoenix – entered the transfer in the spring of 2022 with hopes of taking his skills to the next level, to see himself play on a bigger platform.
The Wisconsin men’s basketball team finished the 2022-23 season with a record of 17-14, excluding the results from the NIT, and embarrassingly missed out on the NCAA Tournament. So, how did the Badgers get here, and who’s to blame?
I’d argue that Head Coach Greg Gard should receive a majority of the blame.
