Student-Athlete Discussion for Mental Health Awareness Month

In the past few years, conversations around athletes and mental health have dramatically increased. Everyone has heard about this need to “end the stigma” and “having conversations” but what does this actually mean?

A group of UW-Madison student-athletes gathered to discuss the importance of mental health to kick off May, Mental Health Awareness Month. The following student-athletes took time to have this valuable conversation: David Vannucchi (Cross Country), Sania Copeland (Basketball), Austin Gomez (Wrestling), Katie Kotlowski (Hockey), Madison Mooney (Track & Field), and Emma Jaskaniec (Soccer).

From the Sideline to the Forefront: The Story Behind True Freshman Measner’s First Year on the Badgers

After a 19th place finish at the Indoor Big Ten Track and Field Championships, true freshman Logan Measner sat down in Head Coach Mick Byrne’s office to recap his indoor season and outline his steps for the spring.

After coming off an injury that sidelined him for half of his first cross country season, Measner and his coach decided to redshirt his jersey for the spring and begin a long rebuild in preparation for the 2023-2024 season. That was before they saw him steeplechase. 2 months later, donning a plain jersey, Measner stepped off the track well ahead of the competition after 2000 meters in his debut.

That’s when things changed.

Wisconsin Volleyball Has Proved Itself Worthy of the Kohl Center

The University of Wisconsin-Madison continues to portray itself as a “men’s sports school” even though Wisconsin women’s sports outplay men’s sports time and time again.

Just looking at this 2022-2023 school year, you can compare the women’s sports versus men’s sports and see. Here are statistics for some of the most popular women’s and men’s sports at Madison in the 2022-2023 seasons:

The Next Forty: Assistant Director of NIL and Community Outreach Talks Importance of Giving Back

“When people see athletics, they don’t think being involved with the community is part of that. They think it’s just covering sports.”

For Bianca Miceli, Assistant Director of NIL and Community Outreach at UW-Madison, it’s much more than that, and she’s determined to correct any and all misconceptions you may have.

Sheboygan’s Finest Non-Traditional Athlete

Sports are at the forefront of American culture and are a regular part of the everyday lives of countless kids growing up. Whether it’s playing, watching or following them, they dictate a lot about someone’s personality.

What is the true definition of a sport? A quick Google search brings you this definition: “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”

When considering an athlete, you think of the largest, fastest and strongest individuals, but some of the best athletes are those that have the ability to effectively communicate with their coaches or teammates.

Watch Out, Wisconsin Head Coaches

Chris McIntosh takes the axe to Wisconsin head coaches amid losing streaks.

There is no question that many Wisconsin sports teams have had a couple of rocky seasons. This year has been a revolving door for coaches. Is Chris McIntosh jumping the gun? Will the new coaches actually turn things around? Fans are left wondering if the new coaching staff will help their Badgers get out of their slumps.

Alcohol Sales at Camp Randall Stadium

It is long overdue for Camp Randall Stadium to make alcohol available to purchase for all ticketed fans over the age of 21.

This is a hotly debated topic not only here at UW-Madison but also many collegiate stadiums that don’t currently allow the sale of alcohol. The main reason that alcohol is still unavailable at Camp Randall, besides in the new club sections, is a concern over how much students in the student section would drink.

Justin Bobb: The Life of a Division 1 Athlete

Ever since Justin was a little kid, his life revolved around sports.

He was born into a family of athletes that lived and breathed all things sports. Justin was a fantastic athlete as a kid, competing in various sports at a young age. He was an outstanding basketball and soccer player. In fact, he was so good that once he reached the 8th grade, he did not have enough time to play both at such a high level. Justin made the tough decision to drop basketball and stick with his true passion, soccer.

Opinion: Wisconsin basketball fans are spoiled

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team had a season that came up short of the standard the program has set in recent years, causing many fans to become impatient and call for a change in leadership of the program despite the success the team has had recently.

The Badgers have won two Big Ten championships in the last four years, made 22 of the last 24 NCAA tournaments and have had only two seasons in the last 17 years where they have won less than 20 games. Despite this, many Badger fans are not content.

I would be lying if I said I was not using this article as an opportunity to air some grievances.
